Curtis Bay Elementary Schools

Original Turn-Of-The-Century School on Cherry Street

Baltimore City School #208 (following annexation of Curtis Bay area from Anne Arundel County), Across The Street

In 1887, the first school in Curtis Bay began as a one room schoolhouse with eight grades. The first teachers were Mr. Strickler, Mr. Briscoe and Mr. Barnes. They were said to have been studying law while teaching school. In 1889, Robert Farring of Brooklyn took charge of this school to fill out the term of Mr. Strickler who graduated in law and resigned.

About 1895, an addition was put on the back of the building, consisting of four rooms, two on each floor. The first building was located on Cherry Street in Curtis Bay. In 1905, the Anne Arundel County School Board built the building at the corner of Church Street and Fairview Avenue (now Fairhaven Avenue). This new building was named the Curtis Bay School #8 (number 8 being the number assigned to the school while in the county school system).

The old building was bought by Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church and was used by them for many years as a community house. The church later sold the building to the local Czechoslovakians to be used as a gymnasium and social hall. They in turn, in the late 1960's sold the building to the American Legion Brooklyn, Curtis Bay Post.
